A vast, protected coral reef system in the Mindoro Strait
Coral gardens, walls, drop-offs and open-water dive sites
Possible encounters with reef sharks, rays, turtles and schooling fish
Lagoons, mangrove forest and birdlife across the park’s three islands
A remote, expedition-style setting reached by boat
Plan the experience
Apo Reef Natural Park lies in the Mindoro Strait, around 30 kilometres offshore from Sablayan. Its broad reef system surrounds lagoons and three small islands, creating a striking setting both above and below the water. Divers can explore coral gardens, walls and open-water sites, with the chance to see reef sharks, rays, turtles and large schools of fish.
The experience is shaped by the reef’s remote location. Most visits are planned as boat-based trips from Sablayan or as part of a liveaboard itinerary, and sea conditions can influence which sites are accessible. Above water, the islands, mangroves and birdlife add another dimension to a visit. Apo Reef is a protected natural park, so trips need to be arranged with an authorized operator and visitors are expected to follow conservation guidelines.

When to travel
Apo Reef is strongly affected by wind and sea conditions, so the best travel window can vary by year and operator. November to May is generally considered the drier season, with February to May often favored for planning a visit. Some local operators also schedule trips in other periods when conditions allow. Confirm current departures and site plans with your operator, and allow flexibility in case weather affects the crossing or diving.
Arrival planning
Apo Reef is accessed by boat from Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, about 28–33 kilometres offshore. From Manila, visitors can fly to San Jose in Occidental Mindoro and continue by road to Sablayan; another option is to travel by ferry from Batangas to Abra de Ilog, then continue overland. From Sablayan, arrange the reef visit with an accredited tour operator, who can coordinate the boat, required visitor permit and park fees. Liveaboard itineraries may offer another way to include Apo Reef.
