Plan the experience

Malapascua is a small island off the northern tip of Cebu, where diving days often begin before sunrise. Nearby offshore shoals are known for regular thresher shark encounters, while the island’s wider range of dive sites offers coral reefs, wall dives, macro life and the distinctive underwater passages of Gato Island. Sightings are always wildlife encounters, so they can never be guaranteed.

Between dives, the island has a laid-back pace, sandy beaches and time to unwind. Malapascua suits travellers who want to focus on diving while also enjoying a simple, tropical island stay. Its remote location is part of the appeal, though reaching it takes a road journey across Cebu followed by a boat crossing.

Getting there

Arrival planning

Fly to Mactan–Cebu International Airport, then travel north by road to Maya Port in Daanbantayan. The drive from Cebu City takes about four to five hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. From Maya, local boats cross to Malapascua in roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Boat operations can be affected by weather and sea conditions, so allow plenty of time for the transfer and confirm arrangements with your resort or dive operator before travelling.
