A quick overview before you compare routes and vessels.

Remote liveaboard access

Tubbataha lies far offshore in the Sulu Sea and is reached by liveaboard, not by daily dive boats.

Trips operate during a limited seasonal window, so planning early is important.

Protected reef system

The area is known for healthy reefs, walls, schooling fish, sharks, turtles and strong marine biodiversity.

Plan the experience

Tubbataha as a liveaboard destination

Tubbataha Reef is one of the most special liveaboard destinations in the Philippines. Located far offshore in the Sulu Sea, it is remote, seasonal and protected, with access limited to liveaboards during a short operating window.

That combination gives Tubbataha a different feeling from many island-based dive areas. The journey is part of the experience, and once the vessel has departed, the reef system, weather, sea conditions and operator planning shape the trip. For guests who want remote reef diving with a true expedition character, Tubbataha is one of the strongest choices in the country.

What makes diving in Tubbataha different

Tubbataha is known for protected offshore reefs, steep walls, coral gardens and strong marine biodiversity. Depending on the site and conditions, divers may encounter schooling fish, reef sharks, turtles, rays and seasonal pelagic activity.

The appeal is not only one single dive site, but the overall setting: a remote reef system with limited access, no normal land-based dive infrastructure and a short operating season. This makes the destination feel different from more flexible island-based regions in the Philippines.

Choosing the right itinerary

Because the season is short, availability can be limited and popular departures may sell early. Guests should compare itinerary length, vessel standard, safety setup, dive procedures, included services and the operator’s experience in the area.

Tubbataha is not the best destination for guests who want maximum flexibility or last-minute route changes. It is better suited to guests who understand that remote liveaboard diving depends on weather, sea conditions and responsible operator decisions.

Conditions and experience level

Tubbataha can include walls, blue-water exposure, drift conditions and open-sea crossings. Conditions may be excellent during the season, but the area remains remote and should be approached with respect.

Divers should be comfortable with boat diving, good buoyancy control and following liveaboard procedures. Some operators may recommend or require advanced certification, a minimum number of logged dives or previous experience in current. Guests should always check the exact requirements before booking.

Planning your trip

Most Tubbataha liveaboards depart from Puerto Princesa in Palawan. Guests usually arrive through Manila, Cebu or another international gateway and continue by domestic flight to Puerto Princesa before embarkation.

Because the route is remote and the season is short, arriving early is strongly recommended. A missed domestic connection or delayed luggage can put the whole trip at risk. Guests should plan at least one buffer night before departure, check insurance requirements and confirm the operator’s meeting point, transfer details and boarding time.

Best for

Who this destination suits

  • Divers looking for a remote, seasonal liveaboard expedition in the Philippines
  • Guests interested in protected offshore reefs, walls, schooling fish and sharks
  • Experienced divers comfortable with boat diving, blue-water exposure and possible current
  • Travellers who can plan early and commit to fixed seasonal departure dates
  • Underwater photographers looking for wide-angle reef scenes and larger marine life
Best season

When to travel

Tubbataha has one of the clearest seasonal windows in the Philippines. Diving is generally limited to the March to June period, with many operators focusing on the mid-March to mid-June window when sea conditions are suitable for liveaboard crossings.

Because the season is short, availability can become limited. Guests should plan early, especially for preferred vessels, cabin types or specific departure dates.

Even during the best season, weather and sea conditions can change. Marine-life encounters such as sharks, rays, turtles, schooling fish or larger pelagic species may be possible, but they can never be guaranteed.

Getting there

Arrival planning

Tubbataha liveaboards usually depart from Puerto Princesa on Palawan. Most international guests first fly to the Philippines through Manila, Cebu or another regional gateway, then take a domestic flight to Puerto Princesa.

Guests should arrive at least one day before embarkation. This is especially important because the vessel cannot usually wait for delayed flights, missed connections or late luggage once the departure schedule is fixed.

Before travelling, guests should confirm the operator’s exact meeting point, boarding time, transfer arrangements, luggage guidance, insurance requirements and any park or permit-related instructions.
