Plan the experience

A liveaboard itinerary combining Dahab and Tiran brings together two distinctive diving regions in the northern Red Sea. The route offers everything from steep walls and narrow canyons to coral-covered plateaus, sheltered reefs, and exciting drift dives.

Dahab is known for its dramatic underwater landscape. Sites such as the Canyon and the Bells reveal the area’s volcanic topography through cracks, overhangs, deep drop-offs, and natural passages. The famous Blue Hole is part of this remarkable environment, although recreational dives focus on its accessible outer reef and surrounding walls rather than the deep Arch.

Further south, the Straits of Tiran form the narrow entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba. Water moving through the strait brings nutrients to four celebrated reefs: Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas, and Gordon. Their walls and plateaus support healthy hard and soft corals, large schools of reef fish, and occasional pelagic visitors.

Conditions vary considerably across the itinerary. Some dives are calm and relaxed, while others involve current, open-water entries, and deep walls. This variety makes Dahab and Tiran rewarding for confident divers who enjoy both scenic reef diving and more adventurous underwater terrain.

Best season

When to travel

Dahab and Tiran can be dived throughout the year.

April to June offers comfortable water temperatures, good visibility, and generally pleasant weather above the surface.

September to November is another excellent period, with warm water and active marine life around the reefs.

Summer provides the warmest water but can be very hot on land and on deck. During winter, the water remains suitable for diving, although cooler air temperatures and stronger winds can make surface conditions less comfortable.

Currents in the Straits of Tiran are influenced by wind, tide, and water movement through the Gulf of Aqaba. Conditions can therefore change between dives and between individual reef sections.

Getting there

Arrival planning

The most convenient gateway to Dahab and the Straits of Tiran is Sharm El Sheikh International Airport. Liveaboards may depart from Sharm El Sheikh or include the region as part of a longer northern Red Sea itinerary from another Egyptian port.

When the cruise departs from Sharm El Sheikh, transfers normally take guests directly from the airport or a local hotel to the marina. Some itineraries departing from Hurghada may cross the northern Red Sea before reaching Tiran and Dahab, creating a longer route that can include additional reefs or wrecks.

The final itinerary depends on the departure port, weather, currents, and local permissions. The captain and dive team may adjust the order of sites to provide the safest and most rewarding diving conditions.
