Kira Kira

Handcrafted Heritage and Authentic Indonesian Adventure

Kira Kira is a 22-metre traditional Indonesian Phinisi, handcrafted by the renowned Konjo boatbuilders of South Sulawesi. Her construction took two years on the beaches of Mandala Ria in the village of Ara, where generations of skilled craftsmen have built wooden vessels using techniques passed down through the centuries. Launched in 2014, she combines Indonesia’s proud maritime heritage with the practical comforts needed for exploring its remote islands and reefs.

Built from carefully selected tropical hardwoods, Kira Kira rests on a double ironwood keel with ribs made from Bitti timber and a substantial teak deck. Her two teak masts and classic ketch-cutter rig allow her to sail when conditions permit, while under engine she cruises comfortably at approximately seven to eight knots.

The vessel has four naturally ventilated cabins with generously sized beds crafted from Kendoli wood and teak. Shared bathrooms feature modern fittings and marine toilets, complemented by traditional Indonesian handicrafts. A welcoming communal dining area, covered dive deck and spacious sun deck provide plenty of room for relaxing, socialising and enjoying the scenery between activities.

Life aboard Kira Kira is pleasantly informal. Guests can stretch out on deck, watch spectacular sunsets with a cold drink and enjoy freshly prepared Indonesian and Western dishes. Meals may include freshly caught fish, homemade bread, beach barbecues, hot coffee and tempting treats throughout the journey.

Crewed by experienced Bugis sailors from Bira, Kira Kira offers much more than transportation between dive sites. She provides an intimate and authentic way to experience Indonesia—combining traditional craftsmanship, warm hospitality and the timeless pleasure of travelling aboard a genuine sailing Phinisi.
