Diving From a Tender or Zodiac

A liveaboard is anchored near a reef, but the best dive site is too shallow for the main vessel to approach safely.

The crew prepares the tender, guests board with their dive gear, and the tender takes them to the entry point. After the dive, the group surfaces with an SMB, and the tender collects them before returning to the liveaboard.

For the guest, this may feel very different from walking off a dive deck into the water. But with clear instructions and good preparation, tender diving can be smooth, safe, and efficient.

Tender diving means using a smaller support boat to reach the dive site.

Depending on the vessel and destination, this boat may be called a tender, zodiac, dinghy, skiff, chase boat, or support boat.

The tender may take divers from the liveaboard to the dive site, follow bubbles during a drift dive, collect divers after surfacing, or move equipment and crew between the main vessel and dive area.

For many liveaboard operations, tenders are a normal and important part of the dive system.

Liveaboards use tenders for many practical reasons.

A tender may be used when:

• The main vessel cannot safely approach the reef
• The dive site is too shallow for the liveaboard
• Anchoring is not allowed or not suitable
• Currents make drift pickup necessary
• Divers need to enter at a specific point
• Divers may surface away from the main vessel
• Marine park rules limit vessel movement
• The liveaboard needs to stay in a safer anchorage

Tender diving often makes dive operations more flexible and safer.

Good preparation makes tender diving easier.

Before boarding the tender, guests should check:

• Tank valve is open
• Regulator is working
• BCD inflates and deflates
• Mask, fins, and weights are ready
• Dive computer is on and set correctly
• Camera or accessories are secured
• SMB and signaling devices are available
• Buddy check is completed
• Nothing is loose or hanging

Space on tenders can be limited, so it is better to prepare calmly on the liveaboard before moving to the smaller boat.

Guests should follow the crew’s boarding instructions and avoid rushing.

Boarding a tender can feel different from stepping onto a normal boat.

Depending on the vessel setup, guests may board from a platform, ladder, side gate, swim step, or dive deck.

The crew may ask guests to board with full equipment, partial equipment, or with some gear passed separately. This depends on the liveaboard, tender design, sea conditions, and operator procedure.

Guests should always keep one hand free where possible, move slowly, and follow the crew’s instructions.

Never jump into or out of the tender unless the crew tells you to do so.

The entry method depends on the tender, dive site, and conditions.

Common entry methods may include:

• Backward roll entry
• Seated entry
• Giant stride from a stable platform
• Negative entry where appropriate and only when instructed
• Gear-up in the water in calm conditions

The dive briefing should explain the entry method before guests arrive at the site.

Guests should be ready when the crew gives the signal. Delays during entry can separate the group, especially when current is present.

After the dive, the tender may collect divers at the surface.

This is common after drift dives, wall dives, channel dives, or sites where divers surface away from the liveaboard.

The briefing should explain:

• Whether an SMB is required
• Where to surface
• How to signal the tender
• Whether the group should stay together
• How to approach the tender
• Whether equipment is removed in the water
• How to climb back into the boat
• What to do if separated from the group

Divers should stay calm at the surface and wait for the crew’s instructions.

Getting back into the tender can require more effort than exiting onto a large dive platform.

Depending on the tender design, guests may use a ladder, remove fins first, pass weights or camera equipment to the crew, or remove the BCD in the water.

The exact method varies by operator.

Guests should:

• Wait for the crew’s signal
• Keep mask on and regulator or snorkel available until close to the boat
• Avoid crowding the ladder
• Pass equipment only when asked
• Watch hands and fingers near the boat
• Keep clear of propellers
• Help only when it is safe and requested

A calm exit is better than a rushed one.

Tender safety is very important at the surface.

Divers should always stay aware of the boat, engine, propeller area, waves, and other divers.

Important habits include:

• Never approach the propeller area
• Wait for the crew’s instruction before moving toward the boat
• Keep distance until the tender is ready for pickup
• Stay visible with an SMB where required
• Keep fins on until pickup is confirmed
• Avoid swimming under or behind the tender
• Follow the guide’s surface instructions

The tender crew is responsible for boat handling, but divers must also behave predictably at the surface.

Tender diving is especially common in current-sensitive destinations.

The tender may drop divers at the correct entry point, follow the group, and collect them after the drift.

In current, divers should pay close attention to:

• Entry timing
• Descent procedure
• Group position
• SMB use
• Surface signaling
• Pickup instructions
• What to do if separated

Current can make tender procedures more time-sensitive. Guests should listen carefully and be ready before the entry signal.

Before booking a liveaboard, guests may want to understand how dives are operated.

Useful questions include:

• Are dives done from the main vessel or from tenders?
• Are tender pickups common?
• Are drift dives expected?
• Are SMBs required?
• Are negative entries used?
• How are guests helped back into the tender?
• Are dives guided?
• What happens if a diver surfaces away from the group?
• Is tender diving suitable for my experience level?
• Are there physical limitations guests should consider?

Clear tender information helps guests understand the real dive operation before booking.

Tender procedures should be clear before guests book, especially for destinations with currents, drift dives, or remote dive sites.

Important information may include entry and exit methods, pickup procedures, SMB requirements, guide support, tender safety rules, and what guests should do at the surface.

The TLC Transparency Standard™ supports clearer disclosure of operational procedures, guest requirements, dive support, safety information, and communication standards.

Transparency does not replace listening to the crew or following the dive briefing. It helps guests understand what to expect before the trip.
