How Much Does a Liveaboard Cost?

Two liveaboards in the same destination may both show a similar trip price.

The first vessel includes meals, tanks, weights, transfers, and marine park fees. The second vessel has a lower base price, but charges extra for transfers, marine park fees, nitrox, and fuel surcharge.

At first, the second vessel looks cheaper. After adding the extras, the total cost may be the same or even higher.

This is why guests should always compare the full expected cost, not only the starting price.

Liveaboard prices are influenced by many factors.

The most common price factors are:

• Destination
• Trip length
• Season
• Vessel size and comfort level
• Cabin type
• Number of dives
• Distance traveled
• Fuel costs
• Marine park or government fees
• Crew size and service level
• Included services
• Optional extras

Remote destinations are often more expensive because the vessel may travel longer distances, operate in protected areas, carry more supplies, or require special permits.

A longer trip will usually cost more than a shorter trip, but the price per day may sometimes be better on longer itineraries.

Many liveaboard prices include the main services needed during the trip.

Common inclusions may be:

• Cabin accommodation
• Meals
• Drinking water, tea, or coffee
• Dive briefings
• Tanks and weights
• Guided dives or dive support
• Transport between dive sites
• Use of shared vessel areas

However, inclusions are not the same on every vessel.

Some operators include more services in the base price. Others show a lower starting price but charge separately for important items. Guests should always check the inclusion list before comparing liveaboards.

Extra costs can make a big difference to the final price.

Common extra costs may include:

• Marine park fees
• Port fees or government fees
• Fuel surcharges
• Nitrox
• Equipment rental
• Dive courses
• Private guide services
• Transfers before or after the trip
• Alcoholic drinks
• Soft drinks
• Crew tips
• Wi-Fi or satellite communication
• Single supplement for private cabin use

Not every trip has all of these extras. The important point is to check which costs are mandatory and which are optional.

Mandatory extras should be considered part of the real trip cost.

Cabin choice can affect the final price.

Standard cabins are usually less expensive than premium cabins, upper deck cabins, suites, or cabins with more space and better views.

Private cabin use can also increase the price. This is especially important for solo travelers. If a cabin is normally sold to two guests and one guest wants to use it alone, the operator may charge a single supplement.

Before booking, guests should check:

• Cabin category
• Bed layout
• Shared or private use
• Ensuite or shared bathroom
• Deck location
• Single supplement rules
• Availability of shared cabin options

The best cabin is not always the most expensive one. It is the cabin that matches your comfort needs and budget.

Liveaboard prices can change strongly between destinations.

Some destinations are more expensive because they are remote, seasonal, permit-controlled, or require longer vessel routes. Others may have more competition, shorter routes, or lower operating costs.

For example, a remote marine park itinerary may cost more than a short coastal route because the vessel needs more fuel, supplies, permits, and planning.

Destination price differences are normal. Guests should compare liveaboards within the same destination and itinerary type whenever possible.

Season can also affect price.

High season usually has stronger demand, better-known diving conditions, or special marine life events. Prices may be higher, and popular trips may sell out earlier.

Low season may offer better prices, but guests should understand why the season is lower. Weather, visibility, sea conditions, or marine life patterns may be different.

A lower price can be attractive, but it should still match your expectations for diving conditions and travel comfort.

To compare liveaboard prices fairly, look beyond the starting price.

Ask these questions:

• How many nights are included?
• How many diving days are included?
• How many dives are planned?
• What cabin type is included in the price?
• Are meals included?
• Are tanks and weights included?
• Are marine park fees included?
• Are transfers included?
• Is nitrox included or extra?
• Are there fuel or port surcharges?
• Does a single supplement apply?
• What payment and cancellation conditions apply?

A fair comparison should look at the total value and the total expected cost.

Liveaboards can generally be grouped into different comfort and service levels.

Budget or simple liveaboards may offer basic cabins, practical service, and a lower price. These can be good options for divers who mainly care about diving and do not need luxury.

Mid-range liveaboards usually offer a balance of comfort, service, and price.

Premium liveaboards may offer larger cabins, higher service levels, better facilities, more spacious shared areas, camera rooms, improved food options, or more detailed guest support.

The right choice depends on your expectations. A simple vessel can still offer excellent diving, while a premium vessel may be worth the higher cost for guests who value comfort and service.

Clear pricing is an important part of liveaboard transparency.

Guests should be able to understand what is included, what is excluded, which costs are mandatory, and which costs are optional.

The TLC Transparency Standard™ supports clearer disclosure of booking information, operational policies, communication standards, and guest information quality.

Transparency does not mean every vessel must have the lowest price. It means guests should have enough information to understand the real cost before booking.
