Emergency Preparedness at Sea

A liveaboard is operating in a remote area when weather conditions begin to change.

The original plan included several dive sites farther offshore, but the captain and dive team decide to change the route and move to a more sheltered area.

Some guests may feel disappointed because the itinerary changed. However, this kind of decision can be part of responsible emergency preparedness. The operator is adjusting the plan before conditions become more difficult.

Preparedness is not only about responding after an incident. It is also about making careful decisions early.

Emergency preparedness means having plans, equipment, communication methods, trained people, and decision-making procedures ready before an emergency happens.

On a liveaboard, this can include preparation for:

• Dive-related medical incidents
• General medical problems
• Fire or smoke
• Severe weather
• Vessel technical problems
• Missing diver situations
• Evacuation needs
• Communication with shore support
• Guest safety during route changes

Preparedness does not mean every problem can be prevented. It means the operator has considered how to respond if something happens.

Emergency response at sea can be different from emergency response on land.

On land, help may be nearby. At sea, distance, weather, communication, vessel position, and local infrastructure can affect how quickly support is available.

This is especially important for remote liveaboard destinations.

Guests should understand that some trips may involve longer response times, more complex evacuation options, or limited access to immediate medical care.

This does not mean guests should avoid liveaboards. It means they should choose a trip that matches their experience, health, insurance coverage, and comfort level.

Medical readiness is an important part of emergency preparedness.

A liveaboard may need to respond to general illness, injury, seasickness, dehydration, cuts, burns, or dive-related symptoms.

First response may include:

• First-aid support
• Emergency oxygen
• Basic medical equipment
• Crew response procedures
• Contacting medical advice
• Monitoring the guest
• Preparing for evacuation if needed

Guests should tell the crew early if they feel unwell. Waiting too long can make response decisions more difficult.

Communication is critical during an emergency at sea.

Operators may use different communication systems depending on the vessel, destination, distance from shore, and local requirements.

This may include radio, satellite communication, mobile signal where available, emergency contacts, or communication with coast guard, local authorities, medical providers, or the operator’s shore team.

Guests do not need to know every technical detail. But they should understand that remote destinations may have limited normal phone or internet access.

Clear emergency communication planning helps the crew contact support when needed.

Evacuation planning means understanding how a guest could receive further help if the situation cannot be managed on board.

Depending on the destination and situation, this may involve:

• Returning to the nearest harbor
• Meeting another vessel
• Contacting local emergency services
• Arranging medical transport
• Coordinating with coast guard or authorities
• Using insurance emergency assistance
• Transferring the guest to a medical facility

Evacuation can be affected by weather, distance, time of day, sea conditions, local infrastructure, and available support.

This is why insurance and honest pre-trip information are important.

Weather and sea conditions are part of liveaboard travel.

A planned itinerary may change because of wind, waves, currents, visibility, storms, marine park rules, or safety decisions.

A responsible operator may cancel a dive, change a dive site, adjust the route, or return to shelter if conditions require it.

Guests should understand that these decisions are not simply service changes. They can be safety decisions.

An itinerary is a plan, not a promise that every dive site will be visited exactly as listed.

The safety briefing after boarding is an important part of emergency preparedness.

Guests should listen carefully even if they have joined liveaboards before. Every vessel is different.

A useful safety briefing may explain:

• Emergency exits
• Muster area
• Life jackets
• Alarm signals
• Fire safety rules
• Battery charging rules
• Smoking rules
• Dive deck procedures
• Evacuation instructions
• What guests should do in an emergency

If something is unclear, guests should ask the crew before the trip continues.

Guests are not responsible for running the vessel, but they are responsible for their own behavior.

During an emergency or unusual situation, guests should:

• Stay calm
• Follow crew instructions
• Avoid blocking walkways or emergency areas
• Report problems early
• Avoid spreading rumors or panic
• Help others only if it is safe and appropriate
• Keep important medication accessible
• Provide honest medical or dive information when needed

Good guest behavior helps the crew respond more effectively.

Insurance is an important part of emergency preparation.

Liveaboard guests should check whether dive insurance, travel insurance, medical treatment coverage, or evacuation coverage is required or strongly recommended.

This is especially important for remote destinations where emergency transport can be complicated or expensive.

Guests should also provide honest medical information when requested. Medical forms, fitness-to-dive declarations, and dive experience information help the operator understand whether the trip is suitable.

Preparation before departure can make emergency response clearer if something happens.

Before booking a liveaboard, guests can look for clear emergency preparedness information.

Useful questions include:

• Is a safety briefing provided after boarding?
• Is emergency oxygen available?
• Is first-aid support available?
• Are emergency communication procedures considered?
• Are evacuation options explained where relevant?
• Are insurance requirements clear?
• Are medical forms required?
• Are itinerary changes explained?
• Are guest responsibilities communicated?
• Is important safety information easy to understand?

Guests do not need to know every operational detail. But they should feel that important emergency topics are taken seriously.

Emergency preparedness information can be difficult for guests to compare when it is not presented clearly.

The TLC Transparency Standard™ supports structured disclosure of emergency preparedness, communication standards, medical readiness, crew support, vessel information, and operational procedures.

This does not mean that The Liveaboard Company certifies emergency procedures, inspects vessels, or guarantees outcomes.

Transparency helps guests understand what information has been disclosed and where they may want to ask additional questions before booking.
