Compressor Systems

A liveaboard offers four dives per day during a seven-night itinerary.

After each dive, the crew collects or prepares tanks for the next dive. The compressor system allows tanks to be refilled on board, so guests can continue diving without returning to a land-based dive center.

If nitrox is available, additional procedures may apply. Guests may need nitrox certification, tank analysis, correct dive computer settings, and confirmation of the gas mix before diving.

For guests, the important point is simple: tank filling is part of the liveaboard operation and should be managed clearly and responsibly.

A compressor system is used to fill scuba tanks with breathing gas.

For most recreational diving, this means compressed air. Some liveaboards may also offer nitrox, also called enriched air, depending on their equipment and procedures.

The compressor takes in air, compresses it, filters it, and fills scuba cylinders so they can be used for diving.

Guests usually do not see every part of this process, but it is an important part of how liveaboards support multiple dives per day.

Liveaboards often operate far from shore-based dive centers.

Without an onboard compressor system or arranged tank-filling solution, the vessel would not be able to support repeated diving over several days.

Compressors help liveaboards provide:

• Multiple dives per day
• Tank refills between dives
• Remote diving access
• More flexible itineraries
• Support for multi-day dive schedules
• Nitrox where available and properly managed

For guests, this means the vessel can function as a complete dive base at sea.

Breathing gas quality is very important in scuba diving.

Tank filling should be managed with suitable equipment, filters, procedures, and maintenance. Operators are responsible for ensuring that breathing gas is filled according to their procedures and applicable requirements.

Guests do not need to inspect compressor systems themselves.

However, they should expect the operator to treat gas filling seriously and communicate clearly about what is available, what is included, and what procedures guests must follow.

Tank filling is part of the daily rhythm on many liveaboards.

After a dive, tanks may be refilled, changed, or prepared for the next dive. The exact process depends on the vessel, crew setup, tank system, compressor location, and dive schedule.

Guests may notice compressor noise during certain times of day. This can be normal, especially when several tanks need to be filled between dives.

Operators may manage filling times carefully to reduce disruption and keep the dive schedule running smoothly.

Not every liveaboard offers the same gas options.

Some vessels provide air only. Others offer nitrox for certified divers. Nitrox may be included in the trip price or charged separately.

Before booking, guests should check:

• Are air fills included?
• Is nitrox available?
• Is nitrox included or extra?
• Is nitrox certification required?
• What oxygen percentage is commonly used?
• Are tanks analyzed before diving?
• Are dive computers required?
• Are all planned dives available with nitrox?

Clear gas information helps guests prepare and compare liveaboards more accurately.

Nitrox is useful for many liveaboard trips, but it requires proper procedures.

Because nitrox contains more oxygen than normal air, divers must understand oxygen percentage, maximum operating depth, dive computer settings, and oxygen exposure limits.

Guests using nitrox should be certified and should follow the operator’s tank analysis process.

Important nitrox steps may include:

• Confirming certification
• Analyzing the tank
• Recording or confirming the oxygen percentage
• Setting the dive computer correctly
• Respecting maximum operating depth
• Following the dive briefing

Nitrox should never be treated as “just air with extra benefits.” It requires correct use.

Compressor systems need care and maintenance.

This may include routine checks, filter changes, servicing, cleaning, monitoring, and technical support. The exact procedures depend on the compressor type, vessel operation, local requirements, and operator standards.

Guests do not need to know every maintenance detail.

The important point is that tank filling should be part of the operator’s normal maintenance and safety management approach.

Guests are not responsible for operating the compressor, but they do have responsibilities around diving gas and tanks.

Guests should:

• Check tank pressure before each dive
• Confirm the correct tank is being used
• Analyze nitrox if using enriched air
• Set their dive computer correctly
• Tell the crew if something seems wrong
• Avoid touching compressor or filling equipment unless instructed
• Follow tank handling and dive deck procedures
• Ask questions if anything is unclear

Simple checks before the dive can prevent problems underwater.

Before booking, guests may want to understand what tank and gas services are provided.

Useful questions include:

• Are tanks and weights included?
• Are air fills included?
• Is nitrox available?
• Is nitrox included or extra?
• Is nitrox certification required?
• Are rental tanks available in different sizes?
• Are DIN or yoke valves supported?
• Are tank filling procedures explained?
• Are dive computers required?
• What happens if a guest needs special tank or gas arrangements?

These questions are especially important for divers with specific equipment needs.

Compressor and gas information can be difficult for guests to judge from photos or basic vessel descriptions.

The TLC Transparency Standard™ supports clearer disclosure of equipment information, operational procedures, guest requirements, dive support, safety information, and communication standards.

This does not mean that The Liveaboard Company certifies compressor systems, inspects gas quality, or guarantees technical operation.

Transparency helps guests understand what has been disclosed and what they should confirm before booking.
