Dry Dock Cycles

A liveaboard finishes a season of trips and enters dry dock before the next operating period.

During this time, the operator may inspect the hull, service technical systems, repaint areas, repair cabins, check safety equipment, and improve guest or dive deck areas.

Guests may never see this work directly, but it supports the vessel’s readiness for future trips.

Dry dock is not a marketing detail. It is part of how working vessels are cared for over time.

Dry dock is a period when a vessel is removed from normal operation for maintenance, inspection, repair, or upgrade work.

In some cases, the vessel may be taken out of the water. In other cases, it may be placed in a shipyard or service area where larger work can be carried out.

Dry dock allows operators and technicians to access parts of the vessel that are difficult or impossible to inspect properly during normal trips.

For liveaboards, this can be an important part of long-term vessel care.

Liveaboards are working vessels.

They operate at sea, carry guests, support diving, provide accommodation, generate power, manage water systems, run engines, and move between dive sites.

This creates normal wear and tear over time.

Dry dock helps operators handle larger maintenance needs before they become bigger problems.

It may support:

• Vessel reliability
• Guest comfort
• Safety equipment readiness
• Technical system care
• Cabin and guest area condition
• Dive deck function
• Long-term vessel operation

Dry dock is one part of responsible vessel management.

Dry dock work can vary depending on the vessel, operator, age of the boat, local requirements, and technical condition.

Possible work may include:

• Hull inspection
• Hull cleaning
• Painting
• Engine servicing
• Generator servicing
• Electrical work
• Plumbing work
• Air conditioning repairs
• Cabin repairs
• Bathroom repairs
• Safety equipment checks
• Life raft servicing
• Fire system checks
• Dive deck improvements
• Compressor or tank system servicing
• Tender or support boat maintenance

Not every dry dock includes the same work. Some periods are routine, while others involve larger repairs or upgrades.

Dry dock is important, but it is not the only time maintenance happens.

Liveaboards also need regular care during normal operation.

This may include:

• Daily checks
• Cleaning
• Small repairs
• Engine monitoring
• Generator monitoring
• Safety equipment access checks
• Dive deck preparation
• Tank and compressor routines
• Cabin and bathroom care
• Tender checks
• Between-trip servicing

A well-run liveaboard does not wait for dry dock to solve every problem. Ongoing maintenance is part of normal operations.

Dry dock timing can vary.

It may depend on the vessel type, destination, local regulations, operator policy, survey requirements, insurance conditions, seasonality, and the vessel’s technical needs.

Some vessels may have planned annual service periods. Others may follow a different schedule based on local rules or operational requirements.

Guests usually do not need the full technical dry dock schedule. But they may benefit from knowing that the operator has a structured approach to vessel maintenance and service planning.

Dry dock is not only about engines and hull work.

It can also affect guest comfort.

During dry dock or major service periods, operators may repair, refresh, or improve:

• Cabins
• Bathrooms
• Air conditioning
• Beds and mattresses
• Lighting
• Doors and locks
• Dining areas
• Lounges
• Sun decks
• Stairs and walkways
• Dive deck areas

A vessel can be simple and still well cared for. The important point is that guest areas are maintained honestly and responsibly.

Dry dock periods may also be used to review safety-related systems and equipment.

This may include:

• Fire extinguishers
• Fire detection systems
• Life rafts
• Life jackets
• Emergency lights
• Alarms
• Emergency oxygen
• First-aid equipment
• Communication equipment
• Navigation equipment

Some items may have service dates, inspection dates, expiry dates, or replacement requirements.

Guests do not need to inspect these items themselves, but safety-related information should be taken seriously by the operator.

Dry dock can reveal issues that need repair.

This is normal. One purpose of dry dock is to find and fix problems before the vessel continues normal operation.

If a serious issue affects a future departure, the operator may need to repair the vessel, adjust the schedule, delay a trip, arrange an alternative, or cancel if necessary.

When maintenance issues affect guests, clear communication is important.

A technical problem is not always a sign of poor operation. How the operator responds and communicates matters.

Guests do not need to ask for detailed technical dry dock records before every booking.

However, for some trips, especially remote or premium itineraries, guests may want to understand how the operator presents vessel care and maintenance information.

Useful questions may include:

• Is the vessel information clearly presented?
• Are safety systems disclosed?
• Are guest areas described honestly?
• Is maintenance or service information available where relevant?
• Are technical limitations communicated clearly?
• What happens if maintenance affects a departure?
• How are itinerary or vessel changes communicated?

The goal is not to become a vessel inspector. The goal is to understand whether the operator communicates responsibly.

Dry dock and maintenance information can be difficult for guests to judge from photos alone.

The TLC Transparency Standard™ supports clearer disclosure of vessel and technical infrastructure, safety equipment, operational procedures, emergency preparedness, and guest information quality.

This does not mean that The Liveaboard Company certifies dry dock work, inspects vessels, or guarantees that technical issues will never happen.

Transparency helps guests understand what information has been disclosed and where they may want to ask further questions before booking.
